Night after night since
1887, this tall sentinel of brick and granite flashed its faithful warning "to the
men who go down to the sea in ships."
THE LIGHTHOUSE:
Standing
175 feet tall, the Lighthouse is one of the tallest in the United States. Open to the
public daily, the red-brick tower is lighted at night inside and flooded from the
outside. Decommissioned in 1970,the light was re-activated in 1982.
SECOND ASSISTANT KEEPER'S DWELLING:
This
building now serves as our Lighthouse Museum, containing lighthouse artifacts and
information about the keepers who lived here.
PRINCIPAL KEEPER'S DWELLING:
Our Museum of the Sea now occupies this
building. It has exhibits on oceanography, marine biology, navigation, and many other
topics.
FIRST ASSISTANT KEEPER'S
DWELLING:
Furnished as it
would have been about 1890, this building now shows how the keepers at our lighthouse
lived in the early days.
LENS EXHIBIT BUILDING:
Built in 1995, this building houses the restored and operating first-order Fresnel lens
from the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.
OIL STORAGE HOUSE:
One of the first and largest buildings built to store kerosene at an American
lighthouse, this building now houses an exhibit of navigational aids.
THE OUTBUILDINGS:
A woodshed now serves as a theater where a historical video program is shown. Another
houses the old generator equipment and an exhibit of Lighthouses Around the World.
THE F.D. RUSSELL:
This 46-foot tugboat was built in 1938 and served for many years on area waterway.
