Biography
Since 1965, Ronald E. Lague has risen to a volley of various challenges in the tennis industry. This USPTA Master Professional held a top-10 ranking as a junior player; faced the likes of Arthur Ashe and Jimmy Connors as a touring pro; coached on the college level; and has managed the tennis operations at five large facilities and owned pro shops with an average inventory of $75,000. Ronald currently is director of the Selva Marina Country Club in Atlantic Beach, Fla. Ronald started playing tennis in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a junior in high school. He as
ranked No. 1 in Ohio and No. 10 nationally in Boys 16-and-Under Division. He also played on the Junior Davis Cup Team. Ronald went on to Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., on a full tennis scholarship. He played No. 1 singles and doubles, won the NCAA doubles championship in 1972 and earned All-American status. In Florida, he has been ranked No. 3 in the Men's Open Division and No. 2 in Men's Open Doubles. Ronald played the professional circuit for about two years. In addition to Ashe and Connors, he competed against Brian Gottfried, Dick Stockton, Frank Parker, Woody Blocker and Alex Mayer. After his touring stint, Ronald took his first full-time teaching job in Washington, D.C., at the Northern Virginia Racquet Club. During the summer, he worked as an assistant
professional at the Birchwood Club in Chicago. Ronald became head professional at Queen City Racquet Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he worked for two years. In 1974 he moved to Jacksonville, Fla., as director of tennis at Baymeadows Racquet Club, where he stayed for 13 years. He hosted a television tennis show in Jacksonville in 1984 and 1985. Ronald then went to Asheville, N.C., where he was the head coach for the University of North Carolina – Asheville men's and women's tennis teams and was director of tennis at Asheville Country Club. Eleven years ago, he moved to Florida to accept his current position. This Master Pro has directed more than 100 USTA tournaments, including the Florida State Closed Junior Championships – the largest junior tournament in Florida with a $20,000 budget.
